Skunk Sprayed Dog

Do you have a skunk sprayed dog on your hands?  There are some things you should do first if your dog has been sprayed by a skunk.

First of all, secure your dog.  Actually, this could apply to cats also.  if your dog has been skunked, get him on a leash, in the garage, or best of all...in a crate.  This will stop the dog or cat from spreading the skunk smell around.  If you have a cat, get him into a crate, fast!  Cats run around like crazy after being sprayed by a skunk.  They will frantically try to rub the smell off on anything they can find.  Your furniture, your leg, anything.  You will have the smell everywhere, and it will stick.  Once your pet is in the crate, or secure in some way, you will  be able to calmly decide how you are going to handle the situation.

If you are facing a skunk sprayed dog or cat right now, you can use this method.  It is guaranteed to work within 30 minutes.  Don't bother going to the store for tomato juice.  That only masks the smell, which will return after a few hours or so.  If you don't think so, just ask someone new to walk in, they will smell skunk spray mixed with tomato juice.

Once you have your dog or cat secured.  Hopefully, not in your home (the smell will linger for a long time after this is over), you can calmly gather the supplies you need.  Always get more of everything than you think you will need.  If it is possible, get another set of hands to come and help you with this.  Get your friend, neighbor, brother, sister or whoever you can find.  You want to be able to approach this problem quickly and effectively.  A friendly helper always makes things easier.  Even if they are just there to get things as you need them.

This is Important!

Once  you have your dog or cat under control.  Immediately check to see if he or she has been sprayed in the face or mouth.  A pet that has been sprayed in the mouth or face can get very sick if they are not checked by your veterinarian.  Better safe than sorry.   See Skunk Spray Effects.

Also, when you have a skunk sprayed dog or cat, you need to give them a quick check now (and a more thorough one later) to see if they have been bitten or scratched.  Although not every skunk carries rabies, they are known rabies carriers.

You don't have to live with horrible skunk odor!
